Primary Health care Overview
...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
The Primary Health Care Programme in Agogo took off in 1979 soon after the Declaration of PHC in Alma Ata in 1978. It was then headed by Dr. Schaffaner.
The programme after its inception developed a top-down approach and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana who owned the programme felt very little impact. The programme at that time concentrated on Ashanti Akim district, which has now been divided into North and South districts.
The Agogo PHC programme was seen as a pilot programme for Ashanti Region.
In an attempt to enable the church's impact to be felt the plan was to provide Primary Health Care along the lines of the sub district concept to conform with the polices of Ministry of Health.
Agogo sub district was adopted on 1st August 1999. The idea of adoption was not only to manage health programmes but also to adjust to provide health care to suit the population served. This will make health care delivery effective at an affordable cost.
The Agogo sub district covers an area of 6,500 sq km and has a population of 56,739 as estimated from the 2000-population census.
The sub district capital in Agogo and it is about 30 km from the district capital. There are sixty-four (64) communities in the sub district. The only tarred road is from the sub district capital to the district capital. The rest of the roads are not tarred.
The Agogo Sub district is the most difficult to reach in terms of geographical accessibility. The sub district shares boundaries with Juansa sub district in the Ashanti Region and the Kwahu South district in the Eastern Region.
