The Eye Department of Agogo Hospital was established about 51 years ago. It is a semi-autonomous unit within the hospital. It is the first Financially sustainable Eye Care Programe in Africa.
It is manned by a resident Ophthalmologist and seven (7) ophthalmic nurses including six (6) Auxiliaries.
There is an Optical unit attached to the department which is manned by a Dispensing optician and three (3) auxiliaries. The deaprtment provides all eye care services which are patronized by people from all over the country as well as from West Africa Sub Region, notably Burkina Faso, Togo and Cote d'Ivore.
The main major surgeries performed are Cataract extraction with Intra - Ocular Lens Implant and Glaucoma Surgery. It also provides other Extra Ocular Surgeries.
The Department also serves as a training centre for Doctors pursuing the Diploma in Ophthalmology programme as well as for nurses training to be Ophthalmic Nurses. The main sponsors are the Christoffel Blind Mission (CBM) an NGO based in Germany and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
